Hot off the press in pre-dawn Tuesday, the 2008 edition spotlights Clay's two Spamalot runs complete with stage door signings, backstage tours, TV appearances, Broadway Cares contributions, and Sardi's caricature; the galas, roasts, and presidential performances.

TBAF Sets Golfing for Inclusion
Clay Aiken and his fans are brushing up their golf swings in preparation for the second annual Golfing for Inclusion hosted by the singer and PGA professional Wayne Player.
Some supporters even admit to taking a few lessons prior to The Bubel/Aiken Foundation fundraiser slated for Monday, Jan. 26.
Golfing for Inclusion 2009 will feature prizes, hole-in-one contests, extraordinary cuisine, entertainment, and a competitive afternoon on the greens at Mirasol Country Club, Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Online registrationfor The Bubel/Aiken Foundation event provides several avenues of participation, some of which are a foursome; individual golfer; dinner/entertainment only; as well as a variety of sponsorship or underwriting opportunities. The online auction concludes Jan. 24.
Following the 10 a.m. registration, brunch, and golf clinic, the main event begins at noon. Dinner and golf awards are slated for 5 p.m. followed by festivities, auctions, and a performance by Clay.

Under "channel," you can select by All Channels, Genre, or Favorites. You can also view the "history" of the songs that you have listened to. The audio quality is very good.
On The Clay Aiken Channel, I have heard "Where I Draw the Line," "Something About Us," "Sacrificial Love," and "As Long As We're Here" from On My Way Here. There are also songs from Measure of a Man, A Thousand Different Ways, and the Christmas albums.

Carolina Welcomes Turkey as #100!
This week Carolina On My Mind was visited by its 100th country. According to the Feedjit Live Feed, a person in Mersin, Icel, Turkey, dropped by this blog to read about Clay Aiken's final bow at Spamalot.
In the Everything I Don't Need entry of 11/14/08, I published the then current listing of 96 countries. By 12/8, Feedjit had registered the countries of Mongolia, China, and Uganda, bringing the total to 99.
Archived in December, ClustrMap is already displaying 55 countries in the new edition. At last count, the running tally of visitors since 12/2/07 was 31,668.

A Teacher's Heart
All teachers cherish the special moments we in the profession have with our students. Occasionally I include my experiences, past and present, in this journal. The incident below was relayed by amazed_in_nj in December:
While shopping, I ran into the parent of a student that I taught in second grade. She gave me a big hug, wished me a Merry Christmas, and thanked me for what I did for her son three years ago. How sweet is that!
She said that her son, now in fifth grade, still has the picture of Clay and me from my Beacon Theater M&G on his refrigerator. So excited at being that close to Clay and getting my picture taken, I had given the picture to all my students that year.
When this student was in the third grade, his class had to make a time-line. On his time line for the year he was in second grade, he included the picture of Clay and me, under which he wrote: "Mrs. A taught me how to read. Mrs. A loves Clay. She loves me, too." Melted my heart!

A Memorable 'Spamalot' Finale
During Clay Aiken's final Spamalot performance Sunday, The Lady of the Lake sang "Invisible"; the The Knights of Ni incorporated "As Long As We're Here" into their amusing ad-lib; and the singer's fans packed Shubert Alley for his post show appearance, some intoning "Right Here Waiting" in the interim.
Reportedly, the last performance was extraordinary, magical, rollicking fun throughout, filled with hilarious cast-audience interactions and deviations from the scripted flow, thunderous applause for the ensemble, deafening ovations for Clay, and gracious acknowledgement from the stage for the special appreciation.
As confetti and applause rained down, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" rang throughout the theater.

Clay took his triumphant Spamalot bow minus the Sir Robin wig. As the applause ended, Clay knelt down, reached into the orchestra pit, and shook the conductor's hand.
After the show, he appeared briefly on the roof of the Shubert Theatre, waved, blew kisses, and signed "thank you" to those gathered below.
While Clay returns to North Carolina for down time with Jaymes Foster and their son Parker, Spamalot will run one more week before the show's final curtain Sunday, Jan. 11.

ADDENDUM: In my normal routine of googling "Clay Aiken" (blogs), Tuesday morning I discovered that part of this blog has been quoted at LALATE. When I clicked on the link for "Clay Aiken SPAMALOT End," I landed in the middle of the piece and casually began reading.
My jaw went into a "slo-mo" drop as I started recognizing my own words. I scrolled back up; and, sure enough, LALATE had quoted a section of this blog. Actually, it's one of my favorite parts from the finale -- where Clay knelt down and shook the music director's hand.
Yesterday I described this gesture to the head of the music academy where I teach twice a week. Orchestral musicians appreciate that kind of thing, and this trombonist's reaction was, "What a class act!"

In Sold-Out Shubert Theatre
Fans Bid Farewell to Sir Robin
Playing to sold-out audiences who know most of his lines and could no doubt step in for Sir Robin's famous "Bottle Dance," Clay Aiken is this weekend performing the final shows of his Spamalot run on Broadway.
The singer's last show will be Sunday, Jan. 4, and closing curtain for the award-winning musical is slated one week later. No more current event exchanges by the ad-libbing Knights of Ni, no more swallows carrying coconuts on the Great White Way -- at least not at the Shubert Theatre.
For a few more days, Spamalot performance and stage door recaps will cycle through Clay Cyberspace during intermission and post show times. Some are detailed laptop reports, others are quick summaries relayed via iPhones, Blackberries, and cell phone calls.

Sold out ... they were turning people away at the box office ... a lot of fans in the front but otherwise NJU [Not Just Us] ... place packed ... changeup on the very last line of YWSOB ["You Won't Succeed on Broadway"] ... peasant semi-fan but a real fan now! ... no woos on the huge tunic flip -- maybe all the Clay fans were still in mid-gasp ... good applause from mostly NJU crowd ... very cold in Shubert Alley ... no stage door.

Broadway.com's Year End Wrap-Up put Clay in the spotlight of three Favorite Feature listings: Q&A, Star Files, and Photo Op. Below is the introduction to the Q&A segment.
Everybody knows that Clay Aiken can sing, but -- surprise! -- he can also hold his own on a Broadway stage. To be more precise, he can hula, ogle scantily clad girls, discuss flying coconuts in a British accent, pretend to poop in his tunic, do a Cossack-style line dance and perform a lightning-fast patter song ("You won't succeed on Broadway if you don't have any Jews") without dropping a syllable.
As Sir Robin in Spamalot, the 29-year-old American Idol runner-up appears perfectly at ease in the world of Monty Python—which, he recently claimed, he thought was a person until he saw the show.
The "fish out of water" angle of Clay Aiken starring in Spamalot has already led to a couple of snarky magazine articles, including one in New York in which the writer recorded Aiken's quotes in an exaggerated imitation of his North Carolina accent.
No wonder his personal publicist now keeps a sharp ear (and a stopwatch) on Aiken's interviews. The truth is, Clay is smart guy who knows what works for him, and he was shrewd enough to realize that Spamalot, in its own nutty way, would be a good match for his talents and his sunny sensibility.
"If somebody said to me, 'Who in this cast has never done theater?' he is the last person I would have chosen," says Hannah Waddingham, the Olivier Award-nominated British musical star who joined the Tony-winning musical as the Lady of the Lake the same night Aiken debuted.

'Spamalot' Cast Greets Soldiers
Making the rounds at Clay Aiken message boards is a blog by SGM Troy Falardeau, who described his army reserve unit's trip to New York City prior to leaving for Iraq. For the full account, see Blogs Over Baghdad: New York City loves miliary.
Previously validated for deployment, the unit was given permission for a field trip to the Big Apple and last week took in a mix of cultural, military, economic, and entertainment sites, including a performance of Spamalot.
By 7 pm, all had gathered back at the USO before the final major event of the day — a Broadway show! When the staff of “Spamalot” heard about our trip to Manhattan before our deployment, they offered us free tickets to see this Tony Award-winning show.
After nearly four years, the show was scheduled to close on January 11, 2009, so each of the last shows was already sold out. The addition of American Idol star Clay Aiken to the cast added to the draw, and made the offer of free tickets even more amazing.

An hour before the opening curtain, members of the production team called and invited the soldiers to stay after the show to meet the cast onstage.
As the curtain came down at the end of the show, I could see the anticipation of our Soldiers. With only a few people left, we ventured down to the stage. Within minutes we were talking to Michael Siberry, Merle Dandridge, Clay Aiken and the rest of the cast. It was a once-in-a lifetime experience for all of us.
I was particularly impressed by their desire to make us feel special that night. Clay Aiken told us that he had talked to his brother, a U.S. Marine who happened to be in the audience that night, about what to say to a group of Soldiers.
After practicing “hooah” a few times, he decided instead to ask the cast to change one of the lines in the play to have them sing some of “Sweet Home Alabama” to honor our Birmingham, Alabama unit location. When we told him we were from Birmingham, he joked and said “oh…that’s where Ruben [Studdard] is from.”

As Times Square prepares for the annual New Year's Eve countdown and ball drop, Broadway is gearing up for a massive invasion of Clay Aiken fans planning to celebrate the singer's final week of performances in "Monty Python's Spamalot" at the Shubert Theatre.
A scroll through CA message boards nets travel and performance attendance plans, even an extended weather report leading into Clay's final curtain as Sir Robin on Jan. 4.
Featured above is a montage of What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? by LovesClaysVoice, who merged several Joyful Noise tour concerts in which Clay not only sang the Merry Christmas with Love song but also danced with a lucky lady in the audience at each performance.

So how are you marking the week the old year greets the new? In less than 10 minutes, I scrolled through this blog's 2008 entries, month by month, and was amazed at all that has happened on the Clay Train.
2008 a Momentous Year
Among the memorable events of 2008 were Clay's Spamalot debut, the anticipation and arrival of the singer's On My Way Here CD, the TV promos that followed, American Idol 2 Rewind, "viral marketing" with fan montages of OMWH tracks, the UNICEF trip to Somalia and Kenya, the Ford Gala, a five-year anniversary for TBAF, the Champions of Change Gala, OMWH at the Olympics, Parker's birth, a father's responsibility, his return to Spamalot, the Sardi's caricature, "The Waiting List" special.
On a personal note, in May I finally met my grandson Kai, then eight months old. During his month-long visit, he became acquainted with several members of the Carolina clan, learned to crawl, rearranged at least one shelf of piano music daily, took over the blog a couple of times, and taught his grandmother all about "monkey mail."

Every year at this time, Clay Aiken fans stop and commemorate the anniversary of The Vox. On Jan. 28, 2003, American Idol telecast Season 2's Atlanta Auditions in which the North Carolina singer's glorious pipes were first heard in homes throughout North America.
For countless fans, now known the world over as Claymates, the beautiful strains of "Always and Forever" were just the beginning. Many have been riding the Clay Train ever since. Recollections honoring the occasion appear throughout message boards and in CA-related blogs.

The "Something About Us" lyric from Clay Aiken's new On My Way Here CD capsulizes the sentiments of the singer's devoted fans. Following the QVC debut of five OMWH songs Monday night, the phenomenon known as "the Aiken Fog" has once again overtaken the Clay Nation in epidemic proportions.
Fortunately, there is a "recovery day" in Clay's CD promo rounds between Q Sessions Live and his next TV appearance, the Tyra Banks Show on Wednesday.

Before his son Samuel was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, photojournalist and 2008 Champion of Change honoree Dan Habib rarely thought about the inclusion of people with disabilities. Now he thinks about inclusion every day.
Shot and produced over four years, the 58-minute award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel, honestly chronicles the Habib family's efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives.
Dan Habib and wife Betsy McNamara will be among four honorees presented The Bubel/Aiken Foundation Champions of Change Award at the organization's 2008 October gala in Raleigh.
